Suicide prevention across Merseyside and Cheshire
Published: 1/1/2025
Cheshire and Merseyside Suicide Prevention Partnership (SPPCM) have introduced a new website to help provide professionals with resources to help prevent suicide and provide support to those affected by it.
In 2023, over 32,500 people in Cheshire and Merseyside may have been affected by suicide. Research shows that for every life lost to suicide, up to 135 people can be impacted, from friends and family, to neighbours, colleagues and many others. Sadly, there has been a raise in suicides across Cheshire and Merseyside, and across the North West.
What is the goal?
SPPCM aspire to prevent suicides and help make Cheshire and Merseyside a place where people never look to suicide as an answer.
A crucial step toward achieving this goal involves ensuring people have access to information and support for individuals in crisis. As well as those who support them, and those who encounter people who are struggling in their daily lives.
What to expect?
The website has gathered a range of essential resources, local and national organisations. These resources provide knowledge on topics like:
- Safety Planning
- Support After Suicide
- Resources and Guidance
- Suicide Prevention Training
- Lived Experience Network
SPPCM hope that sharing the knowledge and start the conversations that will help communities reach those who feel alone before they reach crisis point.
Ruth du Plessis, Lead Director of Suicide Prevention for the Collaborative and Director of Public Health for St Helens chairs the Partnership Board, expressed hope:
“Our aspiration is for Cheshire and Merseyside to be a subregion where all suicides are prevented, where people do not consider suicide as a solution to the difficulties they face and where people have hope for the future.”
