As part of Gas Safety Week 2026, we are highlighting the importance of gas safety and the role it plays in protecting customers, homes and communities.

Keeping customers safe is our highest priority. Gas safety is about more than meeting legal obligations; it is about providing customers with confidence that their homes are safe, secure, and well maintained.

Every year, Gas Safe registered engineers carry out thousands of safety inspections across our homes, helping to ensure appliances, pipework and flues remain safe and compliant. These checks also provide an opportunity to test smoke, heat and carbon monoxide alarms where installed; providing further reassurance that safety systems are working correctly.

We have a legal responsibility to ensure gas appliances and systems within your homes are maintained safely, and annual gas safety checks form an important part of this commitment. These visits help identify potential issues early, maintain compliance with safety standards and help ensure customers’ homes remain safe.

This year, updated industry standards are being introduced to further strengthen gas safety practices and support continued improvement across the sector. The changes form part of wider updates to gas safety requirements and best practice guidance across the industry. For further information, customers can visit the Gas Safe Register. While changes will be implemented behind the scenes, customers are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any concerns about gas safety as soon as possible.

How you can help keep your home safe

• Allow access for your annual gas safety check
  Annual gas safety checks are essential in helping to keep homes safe. We will contact you when your inspection is due and will work with customers to arrange a convenient appointment.It is important that customers provide access for their annual gas safety inspection when requested. These checks are a legal requirement and form part of your tenancy agreement. Refusing access may place you and others at risk, could result in legal action and may constitute a breach of your tenancy conditions.

• Test your carbon monoxide alarm weekly to ensure it’s working correctly
  Carbon monoxide is often referred to as the silent danger. Testing your alarm weekly only takes a few moments and helps ensure it will activate when needed. If you believe your alarm is faulty, contact us as soon as possible.

• Never attempt gas work yourself
  Only a Gas Safe registered engineer is legally able to carry out work on gas appliances, boilers, fires, cookers and pipework. Attempting repairs or alterations yourself could place you, your household and your neighbours at serious risk.

Know the signs of a gas emergency

If you smell gas, believe there may be a leak, or are concerned about the safety of a gas appliance, act immediately; and leave the affected area if necessary.
