Sefton children’s call to end fly-tipping in their neighbourhoods

Published: 3/4/2025

Sefton’s alleyways are set for a vibrant transformation thanks to a creative and educational initiative. In a determined effort to combat fly-tipping, One Vision Housing has partnered with Sefton Council and the Strand Partnership, launching an engaging project that puts local schoolchildren at the forefront of the solution.

This week saw the initiative take flight with an interactive presentation at English Martyrs Primary School, inspiring young minds to design powerful anti-fly-tipping messages that will soon be displayed throughout their neighbourhoods.

The session brought together representatives and teachers from eight schools across Sefton. These educators will now launch a school-wide poster competition, encouraging their pupils to design impactful visuals that highlight the importance of responsible waste disposal.  Topics covered included the serious dangers fly-tipping poses to the local environment and public health, the potential legal repercussions, and crucially responsible alternatives such as local waste recycling centres, charity shops, bulky waste collection services, and the creative possibilities of upcycling unwanted items. The winning artwork will then be transformed into prominent signs displayed on alleyway gates within the children’s own neighbourhoods, creating a powerful visual message for the entire community.

“By engaging with children at this age, we’re generating a sense of responsibility and environmental awareness that will last a lifetime. They are the future generation of our communities, and their understanding is key to creating cleaner, safer spaces and a better future for everyone” Neil Kenwright, Head of Housing at One Vision Housing.

Sefton Council is offering a fantastic prize as the top incentive for the most compelling poster design, thanks to their generous donation.

This initiative is a vital component of OVH’s comprehensive Alleyway Strategic Action Plan which reflects our commitment to creating thriving communities and ensuring the wellbeing of our customers.

Together with Sefton Council, we aim to to engage, educate, and enforce the action plan whilst implementing enhanced surveillance to monitor and deter fly-tipping, and take legal action against those responsible.
