Jai-Lee’s commitment to supporting Young Care Leavers
Published: 5/7/2025
At One Vision Housing, we understand that leaving care can be a daunting transition for young people. It’s a significant step towards independence, and we’re committed to ensuring this journey is as smooth and supportive as possible. Jai-Lee, our dedicated Care Experienced Young Person Support Officer, is key in providing this essential service through our Roots programme.
Jai-Lee shares her role and the comprehensive support we provide:
My role within our new Roots Service is to walk Young Care Leavers through the process as they approach their 16th birthday and prepare to leave care. Working closely with their Personal Assistant and Social Worker, helping them get ready to transition from care into their own tenancy. This often begins with assisting them to register with Property Pool Plus (PPP), or if they wish to live with us at One Vision Housing, direct matching them to a suitable home according to our Allocation Policy.
Beyond the paperwork, I offer ongoing advice and guidance on all aspects of independent living, from tenancy queries to vital skills like budgeting, and even connecting them with employment and training opportunities.
Our support doesn’t stop at finding a home. As part of our unique service offer, we aim to provide essential items like carpets, blinds, and white goods, helping to ease the financial burden and make their new space their own. In addition, we have reached out to staff at One Vision Housing and the wider group for kitchen ware donations, providing the necessary utensils for a home.
We are also committed to creating brighter futures through practical opportunities. We’re proud to offer work experience for Care Experienced Young People at One Vision Housing and the wider group. In fact, we have a young person starting with the Sovini Property Services’ Painting & Decorating Team in early June, gaining valuable skills and experience. We are continuing to explore more potential opportunities.
It is fantastic to witness how much this support is helping these young people and to know we are making a difference to their lives.
Thanks to Jai-Lee and the Roots Service, we’ve already had the privilege of helping eighteen young people on their independent journeys. Their feedback speaks volumes about the impact of this support. One shared their delight:
The support I’ve received has been really helpful and I feel less overwhelmed moving into my first place. I think it helps any young person leaving care and is really important for people who might not have extra support from Family etc.
While another exclaimed:
Jai-Lee is so helpful! I feel like she’s the only one who listens to me and is there for me. I appreciate this service, it is so easy to use, and I can easily contact Jai-Lee.
We are thrilled to already see the difference this service has made in these young people’s lives. One Vision Housing will continue the commitment to give young care leavers the best possible chance of independence and a successful future.
