Celebrating digital inclusion for Neurodiversity Celebration Week 2025!

Published: 1/3/2025

This week, from 17th to 23rd March, we’re joining in the celebration of Neurodiversity Celebration Week! At One Vision Housing, we understand that everyone’s brain works differently, and we’re proud to support and celebrate these differences.

What is Neurodiversity?

Simply put, neurodiversity recognises that everyone thinks, learns, and experiences the world in their own unique way. Think of it like fingerprints – no two are the same! While we all have diverse brains, some people have neurodivergent traits that differ from what’s often considered “typical.”

Why is it important?

It’s estimated that at least 15% of the population is neurodivergent. That’s a lot of people! We believe it’s vital to raise awareness and understanding of neurodiversity, breaking down misconceptions and celebrating the strengths that come with different ways of thinking. As Neil Milliken, Global Head of Accessibility at Atos, says, “We should celebrate neurodiversity. The world would be poorer and life duller if we were all the same.”

Understanding Neurodiversity:

Neurodiversity covers a wide range of differences, including:

  • Dyslexia: Difficulty with reading and processing language.
  • ADHD/ADD: Challenges with focus, attention, and sometimes hyperactivity.
  • Dyspraxia (DCD): Difficulties with coordination and motor skills.
  • Dyscalculia: Struggles with numbers and mathematics.
  • Dysgraphia: Challenges with writing.
  • Hyperlexia: Advanced reading abilities.
  • Developmental Language Disorder (DLD): Difficulties with understanding and using language.
  • Tic Disorders: Repetitive movements or sounds.
  • Asperger’s Syndrome: A form of autism with social and communication differences.

Making the online world accessible

At One Vision Housing, we know that the online world can sometimes present challenges for neurodivergent individuals. Busy websites with complex layouts and difficult-to-read text can be overwhelming.

How we’re helping:

We’re committed to making our online services accessible to everyone. That’s why we’re highlighting the benefits of tools like the Recite Me assistive toolbar. This fantastic tool allows users to:

  • Have website content read aloud in multiple languages.
  • Adjust text size, font, and colour for easy reading.
  • Use a screen mask to improve focus.
  • Access a dictionary and thesaurus.

By providing these tools, we’re ensuring that everyone can access the information they need, in a way that works for them.

Let’s celebrate the incredible diversity of human minds! At One Vision Housing, we’re proud to support neurodiversity, not just this week, but every day.
